If you are building a structure, you think in terms of adding materials to create a final product. 
When it comes to teams, the process of building is more complex. 
Team building is both a process of additive and subtractive action that enables performance. 


Connecting, going to a dinner, or doing an activity together are all additive ways to build a team. 
Removing a facade or letting go of a fixed perspective are subtractive, but equally effective. 
When you think about “building,” your mind immediately goes to additive methods. 


The additive side of team building is generally easier and more comfortable. 
The subtractive is often what is needed. 
When building trust in a team, bringing down a barrier that enables vulnerability is the uncomfortable but necessary work.
