Trust

Nearly every book written on leadership, performance, or team dynamics identifies trust as an invaluable commodity.
Trust is to team performance what oxygen is to breathing.
There is a strange parallel to how leaders approach trust and humans approach oxygen.

You rarely discuss either directly, beyond blanket “it is an important thing” type statements.
You tend to assume it as a given, and expect it to be present.
You are also immediately aware and triggered when it is taken from you.

Perhaps discussing the health of oxygen in your air is less essential day-to-day.
This is where trust differs.
Taking the time to discuss beliefs, desires, and specific observations around the state of trust is essential.

A team that assumes trust exists and is healthy without inspection is like scuba diving without checking the oxygen tank beforehand.
Maybe it will be sufficient, or maybe it will fall short.
This seems like a good thing to inspect before it is necessary.
