Narrative
As a leader responsible for generating performance, there are a lot of levers you can pull.
Exploring motivation, identifying risks or negative impacts, and even connecting the work to purpose are important skills.
Sometimes generating performance gets stuck on a contrary narrative.
Your initial response is to gather evidence, and present a logical case around why the narrative should change.
This can be effective, but often it yields sub-par long-term change.
The problem is it approaches the scenario through binary logic: there are two narratives, and therefore one must be correct.
Shift your perspective narrative.
Instead of championing your narrative, seek to broaden the collective perspective.
The best way to begin changing a narrative is to first enable others to see that alternative narratives exist.
A leader’s real responsibility is to evolve the collective narrative rather than champion their own.
By broadening and building upon the team’s perspective, you might create something previously unconsidered.
