Priming

You are a visually-based creature.
Your ability to construct an understanding of reality relies heavily upon visually-derived stimuli.
What you see affects your decisions, emotions, and thoughts in the moment.

What you see in this moment also affects your decisions, emotions, and thoughts in the coming moments.
This is called priming.
When you see something joyful, like a cup of coffee, your brain is instantly primed for a different cognitive state than if you saw something sad, like a cup of decaf.

Intuitively, you know this already.
This is why you unconsciously watch something inspiring or happy before major milestones or competitions.
Bringing more awareness and intentionality to priming is important.

When you go from a challenging budget meeting, that ends in frustration, straight into a development-focused 1:1, you are primed.
Unfortunately, you are not primed for the result you or your team member desire.
If you were looking for a reason to pause, sip your coffee, and watch a cute cat for a minute, this is it.
