Preparation

In sport, training is about preparation.
In a kitchen, setting up your ingredients is preparation.
In performance where unknown variables will emerge (such as a sport, a kitchen, or your business), preparation is critical.

Preparation is not rehearsal.
Your mind will crave the perceived certainty of rehearsal.
Knowing exactly what will happen down to the minutiae satisfies your brain’s unconscious desire to be certain.

There is a problem with rehearsal when it comes to scenarios with uncontrollable variables (which are frequent).
You enter the performance with a faux-certainty, and set yourself up for failure or missed expectations.
Preparation enables you to navigate unforeseen variables whereas rehearsal seeks to eliminate them.

As a leader, much of your contribution lies in the realm of preparation.
As a human, you will still be enticed towards expecting the results of a rehearsal.
The best preparation will enable you to experience performance that feels like it was rehearsed despite the emergence of unexpected variables.
