Labour

The word busy has become as synonymous with replying to, “how are you,” as saying, “good.”
It is in our nature to fill space; the absence of filled space feels like being stagnant and is correlated with many negative affective states.
Busy is not bad.

Your ability to find equilibrium amongst the things that create “busy” is the challenge.
A healthy brain spends time focusing and solving problems as well as playing and daydreaming.
The act of labour is essential for a healthy brain.

This is also why the foundation for most team development activities is centred around some form of task to be accomplished as a group.
Labour builds trust, improves communication, and develops capacity for team performance.
Labour, like coffee, sugar, and even Netflix is subject to a simple principle: too much of a good thing is no longer beneficial.

As a leader, your mandate is to create the conditions for individuals and teams to thrive through labour.
It is also to have the foresight in identifying when to build in buffer to protect overall equilibrium.
