Fluency
Your concept of fluency in a language, task, or topic is binary.
When it comes to performance, you are confronted with layers of complexity.
Fluency is not as clear-cut as your mind would have you believe.
By definition, fluency is “the ability to express oneself easily and articulately.”
If true, then most of us slide in and out of fluency at a variety of moments each day.
Self-expression is a cognitive process and therefore plays within the parameters of cognitive load and capacity.
Consider reading vs writing vs speaking; you have a different proficiency and comfort level with each.
These are directly impacted by innumerable factors, including your experiences, beliefs, and stresses.
Fluency is not a static state.
As a leader, how do you evaluate the general, as well as temporal, state of fluency within your team?
Assuming that expression is a consistently demonstrable ability means you will consistently have a significant margin for error in the scoping of any task or project.
Thoughtful leaders connect their team’s contributions with awareness of temporal fluencies.
