Two established biases put someone into one of two categories.
Someone who has a previous record of doing well is more likely to be seen as a current top performer.
In contrast, a previous record of low performance will influence interpretations of current performance.

This is referred to as the halo and horns effect.
This effect is not an exclusively external process.
While much focus of this bias is around others, it is also self-referential.

What category do you put yourself in?
What correlations exist between your external and internal applications of these categories?
Which came first, the horns on someone else or the halo over you?
