Transition

When you think of change, you naturally orient to the big, noticeable changes.
A change in career, lifestyle, or living arrangement come to mind.
Change, with a capital “C,” is well-established to be challenging and energetically-demanding to navigate.

The change that catches you by surprise is the change that is less distinct.
Big “C” change is switching from full-bodied pour over to decaffeinated drip.
Little “c” change is transitioning from a cappuccino to cold brew.

Transition is change; but your mind wants to categorize it differently.
In much the same way that you treat preparation for international travel differently than a short domestic flight, you naturally underestimate transition.
This is compounded by transition often involving a smaller change towards a favourable direction; you do not take it as seriously.

For your brain, the fundamental principle remains: all change is energetically demanding.
Whether you are transitioning coffees, roles within your organization, or approaches to a conditioned task, do not be surprised when you are more fatigued than expected.
Even the slightest transition challenges the heuristic and behavioural models of your brain to adapt.
