Label

There is a difference between judgement and labelling.
Judgement involves ascribing a level of interpretation and valuation on something.
Labelling is naming something for what it is within that moment.

Judgement could sound like, “Your decision-making is poor and it is causing me unnecessary stress.”
Labelling could sound like, “I am feeling frustrated.”
Labelling exists more within your realm of control and understanding; it puts a name to an experience.

Judgement can create a faux-relief of tension, often at the cost of someone else’s status or relationship.
Labelling is a well-documented skill for cognitive and emotional regulation.
Labelling can create a foundation of clarity to fight against broader uncertainty.

Your brain craves certainty, but it needs clarity.
Labelling enables you to have clarity around what is immediately real for you.
As a leader, how are you building your team’s (and your own) ability to label?
