Cell Phones

Cell phones receive heavy criticism when it comes to cognitive distraction.

It is not the cell phone, itself; it is the impulse to check the cell phone.

More accurately, it is your inability to inhibit that impulse.

Cutting out your cell phone is not the answer.

A detox does not build a habit, it merely creates a break before resuming your habit.

This is counterproductive; it removes the habit-building opportunity.

Whether it is a cell phone, leadership or healthy eating, there is a common principle.

The challenge lies in building habits that attenuate impulses rather than removing impulses altogether.

Focus on your habits, not the impulse.
